The NSHMBA otherwise known as the National Society of Hispanic MBAs is a non-profit organization. This administration is also named the Premier Hispanic Organization for Hispanic Scholarships and was founded in 1988. This group has over 8,000 members and 32 chapters in both Puerto Rico and the United States. It was created to nourish Hispanic leadership by professional development and graduate management studies. It also helps to prepare Hispanics for a multitude of leadership roles throughout the U.S. in order to provide sensitivity and cultural awareness in management positions in this diverse workforce.
The NSHMBA’s Mission
Their mission is to assist in increasing the number of graduating Hispanics that are enrolled in MBA programs by providing scholarships for Hispanics, mentorships and awareness programs. The organization assists students by partnering with different organizations to hire and to help with developing talent. Recruitment is also a key factor in this group’s mission as it seeks to retain life long members.
Objectives
* This organization for business professionals in the Hispanic community is a way for graduates to enhance job placement opportunities, develop business skills, and it also provides a networking point.
* Through the co-branding of programs and the partnerships of only the top organizations to assist in serving non-profit, corporate, governmental constituencies, and entrepreneurial groups.
* Focuses on creating effective senior leadership
* Funding for scholarships to assist MBA students
* To promote and position all chapters of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs, provide clear understanding, accountability, chapter leadership and national staff
* The retention and recruitment model for this organization is created to retain all Hispanic MBAs for more than 50 percent of its recruits
* Funding is diversified to help to develop executive talent and provide the foundation for regional conferences
Scholarship Program
Part-time and full-time MBA students are provided an opportunity to earn a scholarship that can range from $2500 to $10000. The following factors are considered:
* NSHMBA Ambassadorship
* Financial Need
* Work Experience
* Community Service
* Academic Achievement
* Personal Statements of Goals & Aspirations
* Letters of Recommendation
The scholarship deadline is March 1 to May 1
Other qualifying factors are:
* Be a current member
* Hispanic Heritage
* US Citizenship or Legal Permanent Resident
* 2 years full time work experience with a GPA of 2.75 or just a minimum GPA of 3.0
* Enrollment in the AACSB graduate business program in either the US or Puerto Rico
The NSHMBA have published several newsletters with the last one discussing their ten year anniversary in 1998. These newsletters talk about the founding members, the groundwork that it took to make this successful, and past accolades.
There is now an ethics and fraud hotline that allows members to report any concerns or issues they may have. The hotline resolves concerns having to do with theft, safety, harassment, violations, etc.
New members can look forward to this ethics point system as it is very confidential and it helps to maintain the organizations standards and values as well as provide a safe and secure place for all the members.
