The number of Latinos that are entering college is growing. The amount of students that actually complete a bachelors program is decreasing. However one thing remains to skyrocket, the amount of student loans that are yet to be paid back to lenders.

So what you end up with is a huge amount of debt and no degree. This is not always the case because those Latinos that are completing courses and earning degrees are doing so with higher amounts of debt.

The American federal system does not favor degrees higher than a bachelors, financially speaking. The system allows students who qualify to receive federal funding to do so through their undergraduate years. When a student enrolls into a graduate program it becomes a challenge to receive funding.

If you are a permanent resident of the United States, you need to search our government website for federal student aid. Depending on how much financial support you need combined with the amount of hours you will be taking, you can get a Pell grant. Just so you know, the Pell Grant is not guaranteed and it is based off of your FAFSA application. The Pell grant used to be called Basic Educational Opportunity Grants (BEOGs) simply because it would allow students who needed the financial assistance have enough to get their basic education paid for as the title of grant is rightly called. Women grants can be found in addition to federal funding, especially for single parents. The average student who has been through the educational system will tell you to start with basic federal grants.

The first steps are to apply for government aid. Some financial aid offices at college and universities require that you do this first before you apply for any other aid. To be ready, get your most recent tax returns ready, if you are a dependant, you will need to have your parents fill in their information for household income. This will allow you to have the most accurate EFC or Expected Family Contribution. Apply for FAFSA here: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

Do you know a full-time college freshman, sophomore, junior or high school senior who know a little about email? If so you may want to let them know about the Aweber scholarship. Aweber is giving out a $1,000 scholarship to a talented writer.

Student applying needs to write an essay that is no longer than 500 words. The essay question that they need to answer is really simple, of course it’s about using email as the primary way to communicate among young people. Research shows that the usage of texting, facebook and twitter are changing the way we communicate obviously and many would rather not email but use instant technology.

The essay is asking if the student agrees with this research and to draw from their own experiences to answer the question.

The deadline to apply and write the essay is May 1, 2011. To learn more about the scholarship and application please visit their website: http://www.aweber.com/email-marketing-scholarship.htm.

Are you a Hispanic student living in Florida?

The Jose Marti Scholarship Challenge Grant Fund is specifically for Hispanic students enrolled in public and certain private institutions in Florida. This is a need-based scholarship that is based on your cumulative grade point average (GPA).

The grant fund amount is determined by private donators as well as funds that are allocated by the Florida Legislature. Although graduate students are permitted to apply, the focus of this scholarship is to award graduating high school seniors. The student must have a cumulative GPA between 3.0 and 4.0 or a 3.0 institutional cumulative GPA for undergraduate studies.

Students applying must:

- Be a resident in Florida (i.e. U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen)
- Not be in default for another grant, loan, or scholarship program unless the student has made appropriate repayment arrangements with program
- Be of Spanish descent (born in Mexico or a Hispanic country and/or having a natural parent who was born in Mexico or a Hispanic country)
- Between 3.0 and 4.0 min. unweighted cumulative GPA or 3.0 institutional cumulative GPA
- Enroll at least 12 credit hours for an undergraduate degree or 9 credit hours for a graduate degree.

To apply, submit an application (be certain that it is completed fully and without error) during the last semester of your senior year by April 1. You can begin the application at: https://www.floridastudentfinancialaidsg.org/ua/SAWSTUA_uaform.asp.

Your GPA must be verified by your high school principal or someone who has been assigned the authority to verify your academic record. It is important for you to demonstrate financial need to receive the full scholarship amount of $2,000. You can do this by completing your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on or before May 15.

It is crucial that your FAFSA is completed without error and sent in early enough in the case that edits need to be made to the application. Complete your FAFSA at: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) National Scholarship Fund, established in 1929, was created to raise money for Hispanic students seeking higher education. The council was formed in 1932 and has raised money many ways in order make this organization successful for Hispanic graduates.

This fund was made possible by many donations through national corporations, a matching funds program set by the council, as well as old-fashioned money raising. Guidelines have been set through LNESC. This organization offers several scholarships for seniors in high school, undergraduates, and graduate students in college.

A Three-Fold Mission

Programming – This group has a mission to fight off all types of discrimination that is based upon national origin, ethnicity, and/or race. Key factors with this program are housing, leadership, technology, immigration, civil rights, women, young adults, youth, 50 plus demographics, and health. Program assistance is available based upon the available funding and any current community needs.

Advocacy – This organization is a liaison between the government in Washington and the Latino community. It provides assistance with policy makers that involve affirmative action, education, business, and anything else that would impact the community.

Membership – Programming and advocacy are this organizations number one goals and is attained through extensive membership recruitment and retention.

The LULAC National Scholarship Fund

Established in 1975, this fund is sponsored by over 70 council chapters that work to raise funds for these Hispanic Scholarships. This fund is matched by many national sponsoring corporations. Being that education is this groups primary focus, scholarships are provided to many graduating Hispanic students who attend college or a university. Awards are not the only thing that is offered through this program; several different educational programs are also offered for many of the Hispanic youth.

The GE Funds LULAC Scholarship Program

This scholarship program is specifically to assist minority students who are completing their post-secondary education through a college or university. This minority scholarship is separate and is provided by one of the National Educational Service Centers. Not only is this program intended to assist students with financial aid, but it was also created to provide encouragement to those minorities who are completing their education.

This program is available for students who are college sophomores to seniors who are interested in majoring in Engineering or Business. Recipients are awarded $5000 and only two awards are available for the academic year.

Do you or your organization have a proven program that help Latino high school students prepare for college? Does your project or program seek to serve Ventura County residents?

If so you may be able to apply to the Ventura County Community Foundation (VCCF). Their Destino Fund is going to give away a minimum of $57,000 in grant money to programs that help Latino students prepare for college.

You must be able to show proof that your program is getting the measurable results they are looking for. So if you are just starting your program and are looking for funding, you may want to call the organization before you take the time to apply to make sure you can be considered.

The request for proposal says that the money can be used toward a startup but just to be on the safe side, call and ask. If awarded, money can be used towards staff, volunteer training, equipment, the cost of the facility and other allowances as well. You should also read their request for proposal for a list of restrictions as well. Last thing you want is to receive a grant that you cannot use.

Applicant must be able to show how their program is designed and how they are meeting the needs of the community. There is a grantee program plan that must be filled out as well. Just like any grant, the Destino grant will take some time to complete but the reward can be a lot of money for your program.

The education gap among Latino students is closing little by little but they are still further away from their minority counterparts. VCCF is trying to reduce the gap in the Ventura County. VCCF also awards Latino Scholarships to deserving students who attend college in California. Not bad for a group of residents who created the foundation in 1996, little did they know the impact they would have years later.

The deadline for submitting application for the Destino grant is April 29, 2011 at 3:00pm. Look for the Destino grant on this page: http://www.vccf.org/grants/index.shtml.

“Together We Are the Future, Juntos Somos el Futuro”, this is the slogon for the Hispanic Business Council Scholarship Foundation of New Jersey, Inc.

There is so much truth to that statement and if you are Hispanic, and you live in New Jersey, you have a rare opportunity to score a substantial scholarship for their foundation. From what is posted on their site, previous scholarship award recipients recieved anything from $1,000-$4,000 to go towards tuition or college textbooks. Recipients may have to attend their annual Gala, but if the event is hosted pratically in your honor and you are receiving thousands of dollars, show up where they want you to show up.

First here are some basic requirements for the 2011 Scholarship:

1. Hispanic students must apply by February 28, 2011.

2. You must fill out a profile and agreement form.

3. You must complete an essay containing 250 words. In MS Word, 250 words is close to half a page if you do it double-spaced, so this shouldn’t take you very long. However you want to put some thought into it this essay as you do all essays that you write, consider it your one minute elevator speech to a top-level executive as to why he should open up his/her wallet and give you money.

4. Transcripts – This one is a no-brainer, but if you don’t have one yet, it’s a good idea to go to your school administrator’s office and request several copies of your academic transcripts, you will need these when you fill out other scholarship applications. (Hint: apply for more than one scholarship as many students do not win this all)

5. Letter of recommendation – Again this is standard and you should have several people within your circle of influence that can write a letter on your behalf. Give them ample time so they too can write a descriptive recommendation.

6. Tax Returns – If your parents are late on completed their taxes, now is a good time to push them to catch up. Some scholarships will be presented based on the amount of money that your parents earned the previous year. This is also needed if you are filling out your FAFSA, which you have to if you expect to receive any federal grants.

This is what I can take away just from going over the scholarship application. There is still time, remember applying for Hispanic Scholarships, this money is like having a part-time job, if you don’t do it now, you’ll have to pay for it later if you take out students loans. Why not get ahead of the competition and apply as soon as you can.

To download the application and learn more about HBCSF, visit their website at http://www.hbcsf.org/.

Getting school grants to help pay for college is a financially savvy approach for people to receive a higher education. People who have college degrees earn more money than those who have only obtained a high school diploma. It just makes sense to go to college. What is great about grants for college is they do not have to be paid back. This is a very smart way to pay for school. To get a grant there are some things you must do to prepare.

If you are a minor still living with your parents, then you will need their help gathering the necessary documents. The most common place to begin applying for grants is FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid) website. The site will guide you and your parent step by step through the process.

Make sure to gather all the necessary documents before the application process to allow the process to go more smoothly. You will need: your social security number, driver’s license. Financial documents are also needed to determine eligibility for grants for school. The prior year’s tax records, bank statements and any other financial investment accounts are necessary to complete the application. Be sure to take a look at the deadlines for the application. The sooner you get a head start on the process the better.

You will also need to know the school of attendance codes for the grant application process. The school codes are available on the FAFSA website. Before filling out the online application for student aid, either you or your parents will need to apply for PIN. The PIN will serve as an electronic signature to complete the application. Once you receive the PIN, you then can complete the application.

Make sure to follow-up on the application for school grants about 1 week after submission. If you have completed the application by mail then it may take up to 2-3 weeks. At this time you can add or delete any information as needed.

Minority grants are available for many types of situations. Grants are available for starting a small business, college students, homes, and for medical services. The main benefit for receiving a grant is that the money is not paid back. This is quite the advantage for those of us who are considered part of the minority group. There are several different types of minority groups, not just classified on the basis of ethnic background.

African-Americans have seen an extreme increase for college grants in the last 10 years. This is a result organizations such as: UNCF, Mordecai Wyatt Johnson, the Frederick Douglass Scholars Program, The March of Dimes Nursing Scholarships, The National Black Nurse Association, The American Psychological Association’s minority fellowship program. All of these organization provide grants for the African American minorities.

Native American may be eligible for grants for college. To be eligible you will need to provide proof of your ethnic background. The certificate of Indian Blood or documentation from the Tribal Registrar will need to be provided at the time of application. Grants for Native Americans are the tribal College Education Equity Grants and Indian Adult Education Grants.

Grants for Hispanics has in the past been few and far between. Fortunately the number of opportunities is on the rise . The United States is starting to see an increase in the enrollment of Hispanic Americans. Organization providing grants for higher education are Jose Marti Challenge Grant, The Hispanic Scholarship Fund Institute, the Hispanic Nurses Association grant.

One of the fastest growing minority groups in the United States is the Asian population. Grants available to the Asian minority group are: the Luisa Mallari Fellowship, Asian American Federation of New York, Southeast Asian Studies Regional Exchange Program.

Keep in mind this is just a small number of organizations offering grants to minorities. Another useful place to look for minority grants is your college of attendance website under the Financial Aid section. Often times grant, and scholarship programs are listed on the page.

Finding and searching through school grants can be time-consuming, but it is well worth it. Grants, unlike loans, do not have to be paid back, which significantly reduces your lifetime debt. This guide will point you in the right direction.

Grants can be obtained through the government and will normally have various restrictions and requirements. These grants are normally available to students as well as businesses. You can find out more about government grants at Grants.gov. This site will tell you about the application process, resources, and about which types of grants are available.

In order to find information about state grants, go to your state government’s website. Federal grants can be found at CFDA.gov in the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance guide.

Types of School Grants

Federal Pell Grant – This is one of the most common grants for students. You will be informed if you are eligible for an award package after completing the FAFSA or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The average award is typically around $2,900.

TEACH Grant – This grant program gives students who are going into the field of teaching assistance through the Teacher Education Assistance For College and Higher Education program. This grant offers up to $4,000 a year to a student who is committed to teaching at schools where the majority of the students are from low-income families. Teachers also have to commit to a high need subject matter such as, math, reading or science. If that student somehow fails to meet all the requirements after being awarded the grant, the grant will be converted into a loan with interest for repayment; interest is dated back from the time the grant was dispersed to the student.

State Specific Grants – Each state have different types of grants that they offer college students. Tennessee offers duel enrollment grants that are awarded to high school students who are also taking college courses. You can find the TEXAS grant called Towards Excellence Access and Success in Texas at Collegeforalltexans.com. This grant is mainly for students in high school are not able to financially go to college. Kentucky students have the opportunity to receive assistance from CAP or The College Access Program. This program gives students a chance to apply and enroll in different technical schools, universities and colleges.

There are also several grants that are offered depending on your situation such as, private school grants, single mom grants, women grants, nursing grants, etc. You can find most of these grants online while doing a search. Normally there is nothing the student will have to do in return, but sometimes students are asked to write a thank you letter or even attend an event acknowledging the grantor.
