The world of college grant money can be incredibly competitive. To increase their chances of acceptance many students plan ahead and take some steps during the summer months, or even while still in high school to help improve their chances of acceptance.

Though the government has not expressed publically that certain extracurricular activities can guarantee grant rewards, many students still feel that giving back to their community, maintaining a good grade average and staying involved in their school’s teams and clubs that they do receive special consideration when applying for specialized college grant money.

If you are planning on applying for specialized college grants here are a few tips that are believed to affect the outcome of the application process and could lead to large amounts of college grant money.

Volunteer: Being involved in volunteer efforts can be viewed as valuable on both college applications and those submitted for specialized college grant money. If you feel that volunteering would increase your chances of grant acceptance make sure to mention the organizations and charity you were involved with as well as dates, contact information and a description of your personal involvement.

Get good grades: Many specialized grants are awarded to students who have maintained a high grade point average while in high school or while in their freshmen year. When applying for grade-based grants it is vital to be as honest as possible about your current academic standing.  Grant makers are sure to check your school records for verification and mistakes may lead to an automatic rejection.

Stay Local: Every year there is college grant money made available specifically to students who wish to attend colleges within their home state. This type of college grant is often the least competitive since many students choose to travel out of state to attend their college of choice. If you are interested in which grants are available through your local college have a look online or make an appointment with the college financial aid office for guidance.
